Privacy Policy

Crimora (“we”, “us”, “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, how we use and protect it, and your rights — in line with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

1. Who we are

Crimora is a crime intelligence and safety analytics platform for South Africa. For any privacy-related questions, or to exercise your rights under POPIA, contact our Information Officer at admin@crimora.co.za.

2. Information we collect

We collect only what we need to provide the service:

• Account information — when you register, we collect your email address and username. Your password is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form and is never visible to us.
• Location information — with your permission, the app may access your device’s location to centre the map near you and show relevant nearby crime data. You can decline or revoke this permission at any time in your device settings.
• Crime reports you submit — if you report an incident, we collect the details you provide, including the incident type and the location you attach to it.
• Technical information — basic technical data such as your IP address, device or browser type, and usage of the service, used for security, rate limiting, and diagnostics.

We do not require your real name, ID number, or physical address to use Crimora.

3. How we use your information

• To create and secure your account and authenticate you.
• To display crime statistics and community reports on the map.
• To show location-relevant information when you grant location access.
• To protect the service against abuse (for example, rate limiting and fraud prevention).
• To maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the platform.

4. Lawful basis for processing

We process your personal information on the basis of your consent (which you may withdraw at any time), to perform our agreement with you in providing the service, and to pursue our legitimate interests in operating and securing the platform — balanced against your rights.

5. Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in limited circumstances:

• Service providers — trusted infrastructure providers (such as our hosting and database provider) that process data on our behalf under appropriate safeguards.
• Legal requirements — where required by law, court order, or a lawful request from a competent authority.
• Aggregated / anonymised data — we may share crime statistics and insights that do not identify you.

6. Cross-border transfers

Our hosting infrastructure may store or process data on servers located outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred across borders, we take reasonable steps to ensure it receives a comparable level of protection as required by POPIA.

7. Data retention

We keep your personal information only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. You may request deletion of your account and associated personal information at any time.

8. How we protect your information

• Passwords are stored using strong one-way encryption (hashing).
• Access to the service uses secure, token-based authentication.
• Connections are encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
• Access to personal information is restricted to what is necessary to operate the service.

No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable and appropriate technical and organisational measures to safeguard your information.

9. Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to:

• Access the personal information we hold about you.
• Correct or update inaccurate or incomplete information.
• Delete your personal information, subject to legal retention requirements.
• Object to or restrict certain processing.
• Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent.
• Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (see below).

10. Children

Crimora is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will remove it.

11. Cookies and similar technologies

The Crimora web app uses only essential storage needed to keep you signed in and to make the service work. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “last updated” date above, and where appropriate we will notify you within the service.
