Terms of Service
Last updated: 2 August 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Crimora (“we”, “us”, “our”) for your use of the Crimora app, website, and related services (together, the “service”). By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Crimora.
Crimora is not an emergency service
If you are in danger, or a crime is in progress, do not use Crimora — call the police.
- SAPS emergency: 10111
- From any mobile phone: 112
- GBV Command Centre: 0800 428 428
Crimora is an information and awareness platform. Nobody monitors reports in real time, and filing a report does not notify the police or summon help.
1. Who we are
Crimora is a crime intelligence and safety analytics platform for South Africa. It combines officially published SAPS crime statistics with incident reports submitted by community members. You can reach us at admin@crimora.co.za.
2. What Crimora is — and what it is not
- Community reports are unverified. Reports are submitted by members of the public. We moderate them, but we cannot and do not verify that any report is true, accurate, complete, or current.
- Public locations are approximate. To protect victims and reporters, the location shown publicly for a report is deliberately imprecise (accurate to roughly a city block, not an address).
- Official statistics are historical. SAPS statistics reflect past, officially published reporting periods. We present them faithfully but do not warrant their accuracy or completeness.
- Crimora is not professional advice. Nothing on the service is security, legal, or safety advice. Use it as one input among many — never as your only basis for a decision that affects your safety.
- A quiet map is not a safe area. An area with few reports may simply have few Crimora users. Absence of information is not evidence of safety.
3. Your account
- You must be 18 or older to create an account.
- Register with accurate information and keep your email address current — it is how you recover your account.
- Keep your password confidential. You are responsible for activity on your account. If you believe someone else has accessed it, use the password reset (which signs out all sessions) and contact us.
- One account per person. Operating multiple accounts — in particular to make a report look independently confirmed — is a serious violation.
- Browsing the public map does not require an account; reporting and community features do.
4. Your reports and content
You own what you submit. By submitting a report or any other content, you grant Crimora a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt, edit, redact, publish, display and distribute that content for the purposes of operating, improving, securing and promoting the service, and to create and use aggregated, anonymised or statistical data derived from it — including for commercial purposes — provided that data does not identify you.
This licence is what allows us, for example, to publish an edited version of your description with personal details removed, to place your report on the map, and to include it in area statistics.
If you delete a report, the licence ends for that report, except for: (a) aggregated or anonymised data already derived from it, which does not identify you; and (b) limited records we retain for moderation, security, audit and legal purposes.
Report honestly. Only report incidents you witnessed, experienced, or have direct and reasonable grounds to believe occurred. A police case (CAS) number you attach is self-declared; publicly we only ever show that a case exists, never the number.
5. Anonymity — what it does and does not do
You may choose to post a report anonymously. This hides your username from other users, but not from us: our moderators can always see which account filed a report. This is deliberate — it is what keeps anonymous reporting from becoming a shield for abuse. We may also disclose account information where the law requires it, as described in our Privacy Policy.
6. Moderation
- Report descriptions are held for review before publication and are published only in an edited form with personal details removed. The original text you wrote is never shown publicly.
- We may edit, hold, decline to publish, or remove any content, at any time, at our discretion — including reports the community has flagged as false.
- Community flags never remove a report automatically; a human reviews them. This protects genuine reports from being buried by coordinated flagging.
- Moderation actions are recorded in an internal audit log.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Submit a report you know or suspect to be false, or misrepresent an incident’s location, time, or nature.
- Name, describe, or otherwise identify any person as a suspect, perpetrator, or victim in a report. Crimora maps incidents, not people.
- Use the service to organise, threaten, or incite violence, vigilantism, or any unlawful act. Suspicion is not proof, and taking the law into your own hands is a crime.
- Harass, defame, or intimidate anyone through the service.
- Manipulate community signals — corroborating, voting on, or flagging reports otherwise than honestly, or doing so through multiple accounts.
- Scrape, bulk-extract, or systematically copy data from the service; circumvent rate limits or security measures; or access the service by automated means except through interfaces we provide.
- Interfere with the operation of the service or attempt to gain unauthorised access to it or its systems.
We may remove content, restrict features, suspend or permanently disable accounts for violations — and where content or conduct may be criminal, refer it to the authorities.
8. Intellectual property
The Crimora name, logo, apps, and service — excluding content you and other users submit, and official SAPS data — are our property. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app and service for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may share screenshots and individual insights with attribution; systematic reproduction of the service’s data requires our written permission.
9. Availability, changes and fees
- The service is provided as available. It may be slow, interrupted, or unavailable at times, and we do not guarantee any level of availability.
- We may change, add, or remove features at any time, and may discontinue the service with reasonable notice where practical.
- Crimora is currently free to use. We may introduce optional paid features or tiers in future; if we do, we will tell you clearly before you are charged anything, and no charge will ever be applied retroactively.
10. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law — including, where it applies, the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008:
- The service and all its content are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose.
- We are not liable for decisions you make in reliance on the service, including decisions about where to go, live, travel, or invest, or for any loss or harm arising from a crime, whether or not it appeared on the map.
- We are not liable for the conduct or content of any user, online or offline.
- Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of the service is limited to the greater of R100 or the amounts you paid us for the service in the 12 months before the claim arose.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for gross negligence or wilful misconduct where the law does not permit its exclusion.
11. Your responsibility for what you post
You are legally responsible for the content you submit. If a claim is brought against us because your content was false, defamatory, unlawful, or infringed someone’s rights, or because you breached these terms, you agree to indemnify us against the resulting losses, damages, and reasonable legal costs.
12. Suspension and termination
- By you: you may stop using the service at any time, and may request closure of your account by emailing admin@crimora.co.za. Your personal information is then handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
- By us: we may suspend or permanently disable your account, immediately and without prior notice, if you breach these terms, create risk or legal exposure for us or other users, or use the service unlawfully.
- Sections of these terms that by their nature should survive termination — including the content licence, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnity — survive it.
13. Reporting false or unlawful content
If you believe a report about you or your area is false, or that content on the service is unlawful, you can flag it in the app (each report has a “flag” option) or email admin@crimora.co.za with a link or description of the content and why you believe it should be removed. A human reviews every such complaint, and we act promptly where removal is warranted.
14. General
- These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and South African courts have jurisdiction over any dispute.
- We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above, and where appropriate we will notify you within the service. Continued use after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
- If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remain in full force.
- Our not enforcing a provision is not a waiver of it.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours as part of a reorganisation or transfer of the service, with notice to you.
- These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and Crimora about the service.
